The International Film Festival of India was founded in 1952 and proudly boasts of being the first International Film Festival held anywhere in Asia. Since then, IFFI has been one of the most influential film festivals in providing a common platform for worldwide cinemas to showcase their excellence in film art.
Here’s a list of a few fun facts of IFFI since its birth:
- The first ever edition of IFFI held in Mumbai in 1952, was organized by the Films Division in collaboration with the Government of India.
- The festival subsequently made its way to the regions of Madras, Delhi, Kolkata and Trivandrum.
- In its first edition it remained a non-competitive fest and showcased around forty feature films and around a hundred short films from twenty three different countries.
- It became a competitive fest only during its 3rd edition in 1965.
In 2004, IFFI moved to Goa, which has now been declared as the permanent venue of this renowned festival. The Festival ever since its birth has been an assemblage of cultures and nations; where the world’s greatest film artists get to hold hands with emerging talents on an equal footing. It is also a forum for film professionals to communicate face to face with film lovers around the world.
This year IFFI will once again bring filmmakers and views together and expose them to the new technologies and challenges of the emerging new media. So brace yourselves people! IFFI 2014 is coming...

IFFI Vision..
One of the things I admire about the IFFI is its powerful and moving vision statement: “Ayam nijam paroveti gananā laghuchetasām, Udāracharitānām tu vasudhaiva kutumbakam”- which colloquially translates as for the board minded, liberal, or noble people; the entire world is one big family. A truly inspiring theme that exemplifies the Indian notion of non-violence and peaceful coexistence. The festival aims to nurture, encourage and inspire Indian cinema and expose it to the world beyond. This year IFFI will once again bring filmmakers and views together and expose them to the new technologies and challenges of the emerging new media. So brace yourselves people! IFFI 2014 is coming...
